Arunachal Pradesh is endowed with immense land and water resources. Out of total geographical area ( 83743 Sq km) about 30% (25 lakh hectares) area is estimated to be cultivable with the conventional water intensive and micro irrigation system. The present net sown area is estimated to be about 3.50 lakh hectares which are mostly under rainfed cultivation. Out of net sown area hardly about 29 % (1.03 lakh hectare) are irrigated. This accounts for14 % of land utilization for agriculture and 4% net area irrigated out of total available potential in the state. There is also utilization gap of about 15% out of irrigation potential created (1.20lakh through various agencies. The report of the Agriculture Department of 2017 indicates that there is rice production deficit of 25%( 0.87 lakh MT)
The irrigation development has to go a long way to achieve expansion of irrigated land and its utilization through command area development and water management at the farm level, at least to that extent that rice production deficit is plugged. The immediate mission under irrigation sector of the State is to plug the rice production deficit. As per the estimation during 2019, an additional area of about 0.47 Lakh hectare is to be brought under irrigation coverage to plug the deficit rice production. This would require government investment of Rs 1100 Crore. The endeavor of the department is to augment sufficient resources from the Central and State governments for expansion of irrigated area to achieve self-sufficiency in food grain production.
